MSYO

ABOUT THE MSYO

The Senior Division, under the direction of Mr. Stuart Sims, offers a pre-professional full orchestra experience to  students enrolled in grades 9 -12 playing the finest in symphonic literature.  Students come from twenty-four (24) public and private schools throughout Stanislaus and neighboring counties.  The orchestra has distinguished itself with performances throughout California including three appearances at the State Conference of the California Music Educators Association, and on tours to San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle and New York City to perform in Carnegie Hall.  In the summer of 1996, the orchestra made its first international tour to England and France visiting London, Paris and Modesto's sister city in France - Laval.  In 1998 the orchestra toured Vancouver and Victoria in British Columbia, Canada, in June, 2000 toured Japan, performing in Modesto's sister city, Kurume and Tokyo, and in 2004 toured Austria and Hungary, performing in Vienna, Salzburg, Graz and Budapest.

As a fully incorporated program within the Modesto Symphony Orchestra Association, the MSYO members have the opportunity to work with the music director, principal players and guest artists of the Modesto Symphony Orchestra.  Additionally, each spring the youth orchestra sponsors a Spring Recital for members to showcase solo and small ensemble performances.

The Junior Division, under the direction of Mr. William Aprile, offers a disciplined musical environment to beginning and intermediate students in grades 5-8 from over nineteen (19) private and public schools in the region.  Its members perform one combined concert with the Senior Division, two concerts alone and take two learning/performing tours within the Northern California region where they visit other schools and share the gift of music through performance and social exchanges.

MEMBERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
The MSYO is an honor group composed of students from forty-three (43) different schools in Stanislaus and surrounding counties, as well as many from non-traditional schooling backgrounds.  As such, membership is a privilege and members are expected to attend all rehearsals and performances.  In addition, all members are expected to prepare the technical aspects of the music outside of rehearsals.  In our continued commitment to a comprehensive musical education, all MSYO members must be members of their school band or orchestra if these programs are offered, and have their music teacher's permission to participate.

TUITION
Tuition is $230 per year.  The MSYO has a limited number of need-based scholarships available.

PRIVATE LESSONS
All students accepted into either Orchestra Division are encouraged to study their instrument privately with a music teacher in our area.  The MSYO has a program to assist students with financial need who wish to study privately but are unable to do so because of financial barriers.
